L'Estivantfor Bassoon and String Quartet
McAlister, Clark
Clark McAlister's genial quintet is engagingly summery. The artist Paul Klee described drawing as "taking a line for a walk", which is exactly what McAlister does here. The piece is transparently scored with plenty of air in the texture, and exploits the lyrical character of the bassoon, which stands out through sheer distinction of colour and timbre without recourse to overtly virtuoso writing. It is warm-hearted and anecdotal, mostly reflective; it never complains or becomes angry, but remains essentially a conversation among friends, perhaps over a contemplative glass or two.
