Piper of BraffertonA Northumbrian Tune for Beginner Wind Band
Carroll, Fergal
A piece based on the traditional Northumbrian piping tune 'Brafferton Village' from Brafferton, just north of Darlington. A brief chordal opening serves as introduction, as a link between the main sections and as a coda. The first time the main tune is heard it is quite fully scored. When it returns after the link the scoring is much lighter with the melody on clarinets and alto sax while flutes and glockenspiel play a counter-melody. A crescendo leads to the final statement featuring fanfares from trumpets and trombones.
